Mounjaro Meal Plan: 7-Day Tirzepatide Diet Plan
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors — a dual mechanism that produces stronger appetite suppression than semaglutide alone for most people. This plan accounts for the distinctive Mounjaro experience: injection day nausea, very low appetite on bad days, and excellent appetite on good days.
Why Mounjaro requires a different approach to food
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) works differently from semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy). It activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors — the "dual agonist" mechanism. The practical effects on eating:
- Stronger appetite suppression. Many Mounjaro users report more complete appetite suppression than on semaglutide. On bad days, food aversion can be intense.
- Similar GI side effects, potentially more nausea. Gastric slowing is similar to GLP-1 alone, but the additional GIP activity can alter the side effect profile. Nausea and vomiting are common during dose escalation.
- Faster weight loss. Mounjaro typically produces faster weight loss than semaglutide at equivalent doses. This makes muscle preservation even more critical — you need to eat enough protein even when you don't want to eat at all.
- Dose escalation over 20+ weeks. Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg and escalates every 4 weeks: 2.5mg → 5mg → 7.5mg → 10mg → 12.5mg → 15mg. Each dose increase may restart GI side effects.
Nutritional targets on Mounjaro
| Nutrient | Daily target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | 1.2–1.6g per kg bodyweight | Mounjaro's faster weight loss increases muscle loss risk — protein is even more important |
| Calories | 1,000–1,600 kcal (typical) | Tirzepatide typically reduces calorie intake by 40–55% |
| Fibre (early) | 10–15g | Reduce bloating and GI discomfort during adjustment |
| Water | 2–2.5 litres | Essential — dehydration worsens all GI side effects |
Weekly structure on Mounjaro
Inject Mounjaro once weekly. Many users inject on Monday. Your week will look like this:
- Monday (injection day): Inject in the evening. Eat your main meal before injection. Small gentle foods post-injection only.
- Tuesday–Wednesday: Peak nausea and appetite suppression window for most users. Cold, bland, small portions. Focus on protein sips and easy foods.
- Thursday–Sunday: Progressive improvement. By Friday–Sunday, appetite often returns to a manageable level. These are the days to hit your protein targets.
